About the song
Australia was invited to join in the fun of Eurovision in 2015 for the 60th anniversary. Why? We're not quite sure. But we're sure glad they were! At first Australia seemed to think that this was an actual competition where you sent good artists in the hopes of winning. We were all very nervous in 2016 when Dami Im finished second with an absolut banger of a song (the broadcasting times with Australia as a host nation would have been a nightmare, or at least night time, for us poor Europeans).
Fortunately, by the time 2019 rolled around Australia had caught up on Eurovision and realized what it was all about. So they sent Kate Miller Heidke with "Zero Gravity" who, dressed in her finest ball gown, sat perched on top of a 5 meter (16 feet) pole, swinging wildly over the stage floor like some new Red Bull-sponsored extreme sport while belting out a space themed pop-operatic song about postpartum depression. Yeah, that's how you Eurovision Australia!
To quote Kate herself: "I think what I love about Eurovision is the permission to go a bit bonkers and I love how it embraces all different genres and different levels of experimental music and performance. I love how theatrical it is." We do too, Kate, we do too. Here's to you, your lack of fear of heights, and the wonderfully bonkers performance you put on!
